Modern track recording cars usually utilise inertial based measurements.

In Australia, only chord-based measurements are used by field and maintenance staff and the RISSB and ARTC standards only provide chord based defect levels.

This ACRI research seeks to inform the immediate conversion need using vehicle simulation.

It will undertake the analyses that focus on the conversion of existing track defect samples and possible defect sizes as specified in the standards to absolute track profiles, the investigation of the wagon inertial dynamics under current track profiles and the specification of inertial track defects and the required signal processing.
