What was the issue?

In the case of Australian standards, the current track defect standards RISSB AS7635 [1] or ARTC section 5 [2] do not include definitions or limits of cyclic faults or combined faults.

It is well known and reported that such faults are often significant contributors to derailments, but it is not known how track maintenance criteria should be set.

The work of this project is linked to the previously approved ACRI Project HH10 – Inertial Track Geometry Defect Levels as cyclic defects cannot be properly measured by chord based measurement system.

 

What will be done?

This project will conduct analysis of combined and cyclic faults at magnitudes allowed by current standards for isolated faults.

It is expected that new track defect limits for combined and cyclic faults will be justified from simulated wagon and locomotive response data.
