HH38 Fit for Purpose Condition Monitoring – Mechanised Inspection

Research Overview:

Correct matching of platform, inspection process and application is necessary to ensure effort and budget are correctly allocated to developing necessary systems and software to interpret the vast amounts of data able to be collected by a range of different inspection condition monitoring processes now and in the railways of the future.

This project will address this via scanning literature and correlating the different locomotive mounted, drone and other inspection processes currently and soon available to different applications in the railway inspection and maintenance space.

This will also take into account the risk and human safety concerns which may be addressed for example by using drones to inspect culverts and other higher risk environments.

Similarly it may be sensible to use locomotive mounted sensors and devices for preliminary inspection and then drones or other platforms for higher detail/fidelity inspection of outlier results.
