OTH05 Improving understanding of incident causation and risk mitigation at remote level crossings

What was the issue?

Need to further knowledge of near misses and collisions between trains and road vehicles in the Pilbara region with the aim of providing potential controls that may reduce these occurrences and information that may assist with targeted awareness campaigns.

What was done?

This first phase sought to identify factors contributing to level crossing incidents through analysis of historical data and preliminary fieldwork via passive observations of road and rail traffic at selected rail level crossings.

Model developed to assess risk at level crossings based on both historical data and the site visit speed data.

Second and current phase is an in-depth investigation into the motivations and behaviours of Pilbara motorists, aiming to collect data through interviews with principally heavy vehicle drivers.
