What was the issue?
Despite significant technological advancements made towards the safety of trains and associated railway track maintenance, flaws in the foot of rails resulting in rail breakages still occur. In the worst-case scenario, such failures can lead to major train derailments.
Little research has been focused on foot flaw detection and new technologies are sought to inform timely action by rail maintenance crews.
What was done?
Scan of current research and technologies and investigation of commercial products available and their applicability for a moving vehicle rail foot flaw detection system.
Further research has followed on from this initial investigation. Research project – Moving Vehicle Rail Foot Flaw Detection will develop a reliable rail foot flaw detection method, which could be added to a moving vehicle rail flaw detection system. This research is due to complete in late 2018.
