ACRI’s Pilbara Level Crossing Incident Investigation project, also referred to as “near misses in remote locations” is nearing completion.

Project Leader A/Prof Anjum Naweed and his team have completed the third and final phase of the project, following a very successful trip to Pilbara to canvas perceptions of level crossing use in this region of Australia.

While this research has identified some of the common reasons for non-compliance, it has also revealed a number of key practical and operational challenges of navigating the world’s longest and heaviest trucks that traverse this region.

Anjum presented an overview of findings in November at AusRail 2018, with some key implications for action.
