ACRI research into the human factor responses to level crossing gate technologies has begun with NZ site visits and initial eye tracking testing by ACRI researcher Dr Gregoire Laure of QUT and the site assistance of ACRI participant KiwiRail.

KiwiRail are trialling LED visual warning devices for pedestrians at level crossings. Complementing this trial, ACRI is undertaking parallel research using eye-tracking technology to assess how visual scanning and looking for train behaviour changes with the introduction of the illuminated in-ground pads and whether the activation of the lights are effective at attracting the attention of pedestrians distracted by mobile devices or headphones.
